Create Your Ideal Portfolio and Ideal Lifestyle

by admin on June 16, 2010

The #1 thing that being a wedding photographer gives me is total life freedom. Sure, I have to be in the country for Saturdays that I have a wedding, but the rest of my time is 100% my own.

Start off with the goal in mind to create your ideal portfolio. Start finding some guys and girls to help make that happen. If you start with a quirky, fun, alternative portfolio, you’re going to attract more and more of those brides – adding to your quirky, fun, alternative portfolio. If you want to book couples that are really inspired by fashion, show photos that are really inspired by fashion. It sounds easy to do, but not a lot of people are doing it.

This requires a little bit of effort on your part – but it’s going to take you a much longer time to get to a point where you’re happy with your portfolio, if the couples you photograph every week really aren’t who you want to be photographing.

Another thing to keep in mind is to always create the business around yourself. If you’re a fashionista, it’s a good idea to infuse that into the core of your new business. It’s what’s going to make you happy in the long run.

From New School Wedding Photographer:

Your newly created probably won’t look as you expect right out of the gate, but it will appeal more to the type of bride you’re looking for. From there, your portfolio will be growing in the correct direction – and in a direction that makes you happy.

The most important thing when it comes to developing a portfolio, is to create images that you like. You want your photos to reflect you. Big picture, your brand is going to a You Inc. It’s much easier to create a cohesive brand image and feel, when you’ve created your entire business structure around yourself. For naming your new business, I highly suggest just using your first and last name. Or first and middle if you prefer. It is possible to go by a studio name, with the option for expansion and ability to sell it off later – but I found that having my name as _______________Photography (or Photographer) was the best possible name for my business. THEY ARE HIRING YOU, NOT YOUR PHOTOGRAPHY.
